New “Dignity Care Space” Trailer Brings Accessibility and Inclusion to Colorado Springs
Colorado Springs, CO — Families of children and adults with disabilities often face an impossible choice when attending community events: participate without adequate restroom facilities, or stay home. Standard public changing tables typically support only 50 pounds, leaving caregivers no safe or dignified option for loved ones who need toileting assistance.
To change this, Need Project has launched the Dignity Care Space Trailer, a first-of-its-kind mobile unit designed to provide families with both safety and dignity at public events.
The trailer is divided into two accessible spaces:
- A dignified changing area featuring an electric, height-adjustable changing table that supports up to 400 pounds, a wheelchair-accessible electric lift for easy entry, and essential supplies to meet personal care needs.
- A calming sensory room designed for individuals who may become overstimulated at busy events. This quiet, soothing space offers soft lighting, comfortable seating, tactile objects, and sensory tools to help regulate emotions and provide a safe break from noise and crowds.
“Our mission is simple: no one should be excluded from community life because of basic care needs,” said Bob West, President. “The Dignity Care Space Trailer not only ensures safe and dignified toileting care, but also provides a calming environment for those who need a sensory reset. Both sides work together to support inclusion in ways that have been missing from our community.”
The mobile unit will travel to festivals, sports leagues, community gatherings, and other events throughout Colorado Springs, ensuring that accessibility is not an afterthought but a foundation for inclusion.
